Animal, Vegetable, Mineral: Paintings by Claus Caspari

25 October 1971 – 31 March 1972

This retrospective exhibition was Claus Caspari's (1911–1980) first in the United States. Known primarily to the general European public because of the reproductions of his flower work for the Erich Cramer calendar series, this Munich artist was well known to the scientific world for his illustrations in many books on natural history. The paintings in this exhibit—all in watercolor—included work done in various parts of Europe, as well as Kenya and Tanzania. They dated from 1936, with Caspari's first attempt at flower illustration, to the early 1970s. A short catalogue accompanied the exhibition.
