The Tradition of Fine Bookbinding in the Twentieth Century

12 November 1979 – 15 February 1980

This exhibition of approximately 100 bookbindings illustrated the major bookbinding styles from the 16th century to the present but emphasized the work of contemporary bookbinders. Many of the bindings, including those borrowed from important collections in this country and abroad, had seldom been exhibited. During the first week of the exhibition, the Institute held a special seminar featuring internationally known binders, conservators and bookbinding scholars, who discussed the practical problems of interest to the modern bookbinder, curator and collector. A catalogue accompanied the exhibition, and a checklist was provided for visitors to the gallery. A seminar was held on 12–14 November 1979.
