Orchid watercolors by Sarah K. Berndt

1 December – 23 December 1980

The Institute exhibited watercolors by Sarah K. Berndt, a Pennsylvania artist. Known as "the orchid lady," Berndt grew exotic orchids to use as models for her paintings. She had her first one-woman show in 1977 and exhibited extensively in arts festivals and juried exhibitions. She was in our 5th International Exhibition of Botanical Art & Illustration (1983). According to our records, we believe it was likely that the Bulbophyllum virescens J. J. Smith in our collection was purchased at this exhibition and later donated to us. It is the only example we have of Berndt's work.
