Adanson Exhibition

18 August – 8 November 1963

After acquiring the Michel Adanson Library, the Hunt Botanical Library organized a symposium on 18–19 August 1963 to commemorate the bicentennial of Adanson's publication of Familles des Plantes (1763–1764) and organized an exhibition of Adansoniana to unveil to the public this gift from Roy and Rachel Hunt. The exhibition was planned by Jean-Paul Nicolas, who wrote the biography of Adanson that was included in the Library's 2-volume Adanson: The Bicentennial of Michel Adanson's Familles des Plantes (1963–1964), with the assistance of John Brindle (1911–1991; curator of art, 1961–1982) and Flavia Zortea (assistant bookbinder, 1961–1970). The exhibition included books, manuscripts, letters, photographs and botanical specimens and artifacts. A 55-page guide with an introduction by George H. M. Lawrence (1910–1978; director, 1960–1970) and a list of the items accompanied the exhibition. Complete descriptions of the items could be found in Willem D. Margadant's (1916–1997; assistant librarian, 1962–1970) catalogue of the Adanson Library in volume 1 of Adanson.
