Contemporary Botanical Art & Illustration [1st International]

6 April – 1 September 1964

This comprehensive exhibition of contemporary botanical art and illustration was the first such exhibition in the country. It inaugurated what is now known as our International Exhibition of Botanical Art & Illustration series. This first exhibition consisted of 241 original works by 72 artists, 63 of whom were American. Others were from England, Switzerland, Spain and South Africa. The majority of the works were watercolors or pen-and-ink drawings, but there were also colored woodcuts, wood engravings, lithographs, serigraphs and linoleum cuts. A catalogue illustrated with black-and-white photographs of the artists accompanied the exhibition.
