Antoine Laurent de Jussieu

(1748–1836)

Antoine Laurent de Jussieu developed a natural system as early as 1774, incorporating a natural classification system along with Linnaeus’ binomial nomenclature. Jussieu evaluated and described an enormous number of plants new to Europe, brought back from voyages of exploration. His system was published in Genera Plantarum in 1789, the year of the French Revolution. Jussieu has been called one of the most intuitive and perceptive specialists in plant classification that the world has yet produced.
