The Plant Taxonomic Database Standards series presents standards for formatting botanical data, prepared by the International Working Group on Taxonomic Databases for Plant Sciences (TDWG) to promote wider and more effective collaboration, dissemination and exchange of information among plant taxonomic databases. This first standard in the series listed the various data items needed in a database on the plants grown in a botanic garden. It explained the meaning of each data item, outlined the rules that pertained to it and showed how it could be categorized and stored, both in manual systems and in the computer. It then provided a format for exchanging electronic plant records that contained these data items.
