Botanical Illustrations
 by Anne Ophelia Todd Dowden

17 October 1965 – 15 May 1966

After including Anne Ophelia Todd Dowden's work in the Contemporary Botanical Art & Illustration (1st International) exhibition in 1964, Hunt Botanical Library mounted a one-person exhibition of her work. This exhibition featured 93 items and emphasized Dowden's published illustrations, including preliminary artwork, original paintings, production proofs and page openings. A short catalogue with black-and-white figures accompanied this exhibition.

This was the beginning of a long relationship with the artist, who had been an acquaintance of Rachel Hunt. Dowden's work was included in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Internationals and a 2003 exhibition celebrating her 95th birthday. The Institute is also the repository of the most extensive collection of Dowden original watercolors and ink drawings (479), research drawings, publication layouts and correspondence through a gift from the artist.
